The area known as South Street in Philadelphia is approximately 10 blocks long and has a fun bohemian flair! With over 300 shops and 60 restaurants, it’s a great place to people watch, wander into eclectic shops, have a famous Philly Cheesesteak, or listen to music! I had read when I returned home, that the area has been known for being a bit seedy or perhaps even dangerous…but I didn’t sense that and felt perfectly safe as a solo female traveler!

As a first time visitor to Philadelphia, having a Philly Cheesesteak was definitely on my list of must-dos! Jim’s Steaks was recommended, so I stopped in…
I chose Provolone cheese instead of the traditional melted cheese and of course, had onions. It was very tasty!
I stopped in the restroom and couldn’t resist snapping this funky photo!

There’s a place called Phil’s Magic Gardens that I had originally planned to go to for $7.00, but there was so much to see from the outside, and other mosaics along South Street, I didn’t pay to enter. Can you say “busy”! Isaiah Zagar is the artist who had the vision to create this urban art museum.

Thanks for the pictures. While I’ve been living in the south that’s been building away for twenty years, think all new; I love seeing these old brick buildings with new paintings. I would guess they’ve cleaned up their city and kept someone busy being creative at the same time; win/win!

Enjoying your photos of this city… years ago I had a job that took me there on several occasions but all I remember was my hair literally freezing on my morning runs from the hotel, playing backgammon at a bar in the evenings (a popular pasttime there, at least in those days) and visiting the Liberty Bell. The rest of the time I was too busy working or riding in the taxi back and forth to the airport. So it’s great to see the area through your eyes.

No wonder you didn’t have time to pay to go into that place. There was so much else to see. The street art is sure fancy in some places. I wondered what happens after time and weather wears the paint off. It wouldn’t be easy to replace that kind of artwork. I love the picture (of yourself I presume) through the bathroom door.
