Itinerary for USA Road Trip

Here’s the rough draft of the itinerary for my upcoming road trip leaving next week!  Woo Hoo!  I have now switched gears, yet again, from buying a tear drop camper, to buying a van, to camping, to Couchsurfing!  If you’ve been a follower for a while you’ll recall my wonderful experience Couchsuring in Cape Town for four nights (read about it here)!  I’m putting out a few requests and will have my tent and camping gear with me in my Honda Civic for occasional camping.

Although I’m occasionally a bit indecisive, this trip feels right and not just because of the fortune I opened in my cookie from take-out Chinese the other night…

I’m not finished researching the areas, so I don’t have all of the sights/activities listed I hope to see/do!  I’d love to hear from you if you’ve been to any of these areas and have recommendations!

Drive 6 1/2 hours from Cincinnati to Asheville, N.C. and stay for 3 nights.  Visit The Biltmore Estates and take the Gray Line Trolley (hop on/hop off) to see the sights around town.

Drive 4 1/2 hours to Charleston, S.C. and stay for 3 nights.

Drive 2 1/2 hours to Savannah, Georgia and stay for 2 nights.

Drive 7 1/2 hours to Destin Beach and stay 7 nights exploring the beautiful beaches in the area including Fort Walton, Pensacola, Rosemary and Panama City Beaches.

Drive 7 1/2 hours to St. Petersburg Beach/Tampa Bay area and stay 3 nights.  I’ll probably be staying with a fellow blogger…the beautiful Zully from Spiritual World Traveler, if she’s in town.  So exciting!

Drive a little over 4 hours to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale beaches and stay for 3 nights.

Drive almost 3 hours to Cape Coral (Ft. Myers Beach) and stay for a few weeks.  Family members have a condo there that they generously allow me to use.   I’ll be picking my husband up at the airport the day before Thanksgiving and he’ll stay for a week.

I hope to meet Betty from Heifer 12 x 12 on this trip also!  I’m thinking on the way back will work better for her because she is visiting a different country every month this year and blogging about it!  It’s amazing and she’s amazing!

  4. Biltmore is one of my favs, been there like four times. I was really into old mansions n the age of industrialization like forever. also I loved greenery and plants and anything Victorian. okay that’s a great trip, how many weeks? cuz the gulf is fabulous and the drive through the mountains will be so smoky n pretty! Can’t wZi to read bout it. You can come n see me in Atlanta.

  5. Now that’s an itinerary my wife and I would like. When travelling we always – at least whenever possible – make a point to stay 3 to 4 days at least in one place to be able to do our sightseeing at leisure and not to have to hurry.
    Enjoy that trip! I’m looking forward to reading about it, even if that’ll certainly make me jealous. 😉

    • But…remember I’ll be traveling solo, so it gets lonely sometimes and camping or staying with people I don’t know. Not quite the same as what you are used to probably. But, I am grateful that I’m able to see these places and make it work! 🙂

      • Well, I’m happy to say that now, in my second marriage here in the US, I’m lucky to be married to a wonderful wife that likes travelling with me, whereas in my first marriage in Germany I used to travel on my own. Not that It was too bad, but with a loved one to share the joys it’s doubled joy, as we say in Germany.
        I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you’ll meet some nice people on your trip and enjoy it – even solo.

  6. If you want a beach that is totally undeveloped and more raw than the groomed ones, I suggest going to Hunting Beach State Park in South Carolina near Charleston. I blogged about it here: http://wp.me/p1Di6i-1y But I did not get good pictures of the beach itself. It’s definitely off the beaten path though!

  8. Looks like a fun trip. Unfortunately I don’t have much to offer in terms of tips since this is not an area I have travelled much to. But I hope you will have a nice road trip. Nothing like hitting the road…

  11. Great trip …. again – and to meet up with blogging friends – I would love to do that too. Just travel around and meet up with people I met blogging. My next month on my lottery tickets.
    Miami is high up on my bucket list .. but I want only to visit Miami Beach and the Keys. I have to hurry up … if I’m going to manage. Charlotte is supposed to be a beautiful spot.
    Have friends that was in Ft. Lauderdale and they said it was just theme parks and cruise liners, they regret that they didn’t chose Miami Beach instead. They don’t have any kids.

  12. How exciting!!! I’ve been to the Biltmore a couple of times. Love, love, love that place. Get there early! This way there is (hopefully) fewer visitors in each room with you. It will allow you to take in each room more leisurely and more as a whole. When it becomes busy it is a constant flow and feels like you are pushed along with the herd. Enjoy walking the grounds after you’ve done at least the main tour of the house. It may take some time, so you may have to grab a bite to eat there if you haven’t eaten just prior to arriving or brought along a snack. I’d love to do some of the little extras that they offer sometime.
    As for Charleston, you can walk most of the historic area…so worth it!!! I did a post on it when we took a trip there for our anniversary. ( http://thegregarioushouse.com/?p=13) If you like historic homes, be sure to check out the urban plantations along the Ashley River. Especially Drayton Hall, since you love to take photos! (http://thegregarioushouse.com/?p=1270) No holds bar on the photos because this is a conservation project and not restoration.
    The hop~on, hop~off trolley for Savannah is the way to see a lot and get a feel for what you may want to get back to.
    I hear Destin is to die for in terms of beaches!

    • Thanks for all of the great tips! The optimum time to take outdoor photos is before 10am or after 4pm, so my dilemma for the Biltmore is wanting to take photos of the gardens before I tour the inside. They open at 9am…so I’m hoping to get some photos outside first..then be in by 9:30 or 10am.
