Lodge to Lodge Hiking on the Appalachian Trail – Day 1

After driving  8 hours from Cincinnati to Thornton Gap (an entrance to Skyline Drive – a 115 mile scenic road & where I left my car parked) in the Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, my friend Cindy and I were picked up by Rodney from Mountain & Valley Shuttle Service and taken to Big Meadows Lodge (about 20-30 minutes from Thornton Gap), where we would spend our first evening, before hiking for two days on the AT, back to my car.

I liked the idea of carrying enough clothes & toiletry items for a couple of days and a day’s worth of food and water in your backpack.

After checking in, we took a few photos and had a yummy dinner.  I had the Mountain Trout with rice and a veggie.  We shared a bottle of wine and were definitely relaxed and looking forward to hiking 7.7 miles to the next location…Skyland Resort!

There were deer grazing in the yard of the Lodge and they were quite tame!

Of course we had to take some goofy photos…

We staked out a spot to watch the sun set and had a beautiful view!

  1. I am looking for more information on the lodge to lodge hiking, specifically a shuttle service. We will be in Big Meadows the first night and Skyland Resort the second night.
